US and China to meet in finals

Reigning Olympic champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh of the United States advanced to the Beijing 2008 Women’s Beach Volleyball final with a 21-12, 21-14 victory in 39 minutes over sixth seeded Renata Ribeiro and Talita Rocha of Brazil.

They will meet top-seeded Tian Jia and Wang Jie of China, who defeated their compatriots, fourth-seeded Xue Chen and Zhang Xi, in another semifinal match on Tuesday.

Both the US and Brazilian teams went to the semifinal with an undefeated record in the Beijing 2008 tournament. However, the US pair, who had posted 12 straight wins in a row in Olympic matches since Athens 2004, turned out to be too strong for the Brazilians to overtake.

The first set was lopsided, with the US duo maintaining a five to six point lead through the whole set. May-Treanor’s spike in the last minute nailed the score at 21-12.

The second set wasn’t much different. The Brazilian pair fought to take an early 4-3 lead; however, May-Treanor and Walsh quickly leveled the score at 5-5 and again took over the lead. The Brazilian pair saved themselves twice at match point after the score reached 20-12, but Rocha’s service error gave the US team the point to win the match.

“We don’t think about numbers. The only numbers we think about are 21 (points, to win a set), winning in two sets and finishing No. 1,” May-Treanor said when asked what she thought of their winning streak.

US and China to meet in final

The other semifinal match, staged between the two Chinese teams, was close and intense. Top-seeded Tian and Wang came back from one set down to win the next two in one hour and 14 minutes.

In the first set, Wang and Tian got two set points first, but were unable to put away their young, determined compatriots, who won 24-22.

The second set again was played in a seesawing fashion, with Wang and Tian narrowly taking the win, 29-27.

Top-seeded Wang and Tian started to show their strength in the tie-breaker, winning the set by a larger margin than the previous two, 15-8.

Wang and Tian will challenge the US pair in the final in an attempt to earn the first Chinese gold medal for Beach Volleyball in Olympic history.

The final will begin on August 21 at the Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground.

Vos laps field to win first Dutch gold on Cycling Track

Vos laps field to wins first Dutch gold on Cycling Track

Marianne Vos of the Netherlands erased her disappointment of finishing sixth in the Cycling Road Race with a clear victory in the Women’s Points Race at the Laoshan Velodrome on Monday.

Vos lapped the field and won the first of 10 sprints to lock up the gold medal in the 100-lap, 25-kilometre race featuring 10 point sprints. It is the first Olympic medal of her career.

Yoanka Gonzalez of Cuba won the second, eighth and 10th sprints to take the silver medal and Leire Olaberria of Spain took the bronze with 13 points. Gonzalez’s silver was the first Olympic medal in Cycling Track for Cuba.

Olaberria tied Maria Luisa Calle of Colombia on points, but the tie-breaker was the position across the line in the final sprint. With second in the final sprint, the Spanish rider claimed the final spot on the podium.

Sarah Hammer of the United States, Wadami Satomi of Japan, Verena Jooss of Germany and Li Yan of China crashed just after the second sprint when riders touched wheels in the bunch. Only Li could continue.

Great Britain’s Rebecca Romero, a day after winning the Women’s Individual Pursuit gold medal, was active throughout the first half, chasing down breakaways, but every time she tried to pull away from the pack, someone marked her wheel.

Calle chased her down to pull to a tie with Vos after six sprints.

Vos went on to the attack to lap the field ahead of the seventh sprint to gain a decisive, 20-point bonus. Gonzalez surged into second with two sprints to go, leaving Calle and Olaberria to race for third.

Great Britain sets world mark and wins gold in Team Pursuit

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Great Britain rewrote the history books with an Olympic and world record in winning the Men’s Team Pursuit at the Laoshan Velodrome on Monday.

Great Britain nearly caught Denmark in the final lap to claim its first Men’s Team Pursuit gold medal since the London 1908 Olympic Games and improved on the previous record it set Sunday (3:55.202), finishing in 3:53.314.

Denmark (4:00.040) was out-gunned from the beginning of the 4km, 16-lap test against the clock, taking their first Team Pursuit Olympic medal since a bronze in the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games.

In the bronze medal round, New Zealand (3:57.776) scored an impressive victory ahead of defending Olympic champions Australia (3:59.006).

The race was nearly a dead heat at the midway point, but New Zealand slowly pulled away to win their first medal in Men’s Team Pursuit competition in the Olympic Games.

Australia was hoping to win its sixth medal in seven Olympic Games, but failed.

Great Britain’s Bradley Wiggins was the key motor for Great Britain and scores his second gold medal of Beijing 2008 after winning the Men’s Individual Pursuit.

He will line up with partner Mark Cavendish in the Madison in Tuesday’s final day of competition at the Laoshan Velodrome.

Nadal crowns summer season with Olympic gold

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Rafael Nadal of Spain confirmed his position at the top of the world rankings by taking Olympic gold in the Men’s Singles in front of a capacity crowd in Center Court at the Olympic Green Tennis Center on Sunday, August 17. The French Open and Wimbledon champion defeated No. 12 seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile

6-3, 7-6(2), 6-3 to hand Spain its first ever gold medal in Tennis.

The championship victory was Nadal’s eighth title of the year, and after being second-ranked in the world for more than three years, he will be anointed World No. 1 on August 18, just ahead of his bid for a sixth Grand Slam title at the US Open. Nadal has lost just once in his past 39 matches.

“Not in my best dreams can I have imagined this,” Nadal said after being crowned the Olympic champion.

Gonzalez improved on his bronze Singles medal from Athens, and together with his Athens Doubles gold and his silver medal in Beijing, becomes the 10th man to win three or more Olympic Tennis medals.

The Chilean, who had a huge part to play in the high-quality encounter, saved three match points when trailing 2-5 in the third set, the last of which Nadal had set up by successfully challenging a forehand the linesman had called out. Nadal served out the match and a tense final game by taking his fourth match point when Gonzalez returned a crosscourt forehand into the net.

The new Olympic Men’s Singles champion collapsed on court as the crowd rose to their feet to applaud both players for an enthralling finale to the Olympic Tennis event.

The nail-biting second set was a feast of sublime Tennis from both players. Gonzalez’s tactical backhand slice, which had been unsuccessful in the first set, was put to good use in softening Nadal’s explosive forehand as the Chilean went on the attack to match Nadal for winners.

Neither player faced break point until the twelfth game, when Gonzalez, leading 6-5, lost two break and set points on the Nadal serve with consecutive forehand errors, which the Spaniard took advantage of with yet another searing forehand down the line to set up a tiebreak. From then, the set was for Nadal’s taking as he closed out a two-set lead with the loss of just two points in the tiebreaker.

Nadal got into the final by defeating No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia in a high-tension semifinal. But Djokovic stormed through a 76-minute victory over James Blake of the United States on Saturday, August 17 to take the bronze medal.

“For me, this bronze shines like gold because I think I’ve played pretty good Tennis the entire tournament,” said Djokovic, who handed Serbia its second medal of the Beijing Olympic Games.

Blake, meanwhile, will forever be known as the man who ended Roger Federer’s dreams of Olympic glory in the Men’s Singles in Beijing. The World No. 1, who had worn his heart on his sleeve since his Olympic campaign began at the start of the season, fell to Blake for the first time in nine career meetings with the American. Blake cited his victory as one of the biggest of his career.

As seems to be customary in Olympic Tennis, the Men’s Singles competition bubbled with all the surprise and drama of an entire season. Djokovic’s teammate Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia caused the first upset of the tournament when he defeated No. 5 seed David Ferrer of Spain in their first round match, which turned out to be a bad day for Spain as Nicolas Almagro and Tommy Robredo also fell by the wayside to lower-ranked players.

Fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko of Russia joined Ferrer the next day at the hands of Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, one of four French players to safely reach the third round, and Tipsarevic’s great start to the tournament ended with a nasty sprained right ankle in his second round match against Olivier Rochus of Belgium.

Australian hopes of a good run in Beijing were dealt a blow when Lleyton Hewitt was drawn to meet Nadal in the second round.

Russia and France were the only NOCs to have more than one player advance past the first round. Nineteen NOCs started with multiple player representation in the Men’s Singles.

Nine of the top 10 men in the world competed in the Men’s Singles, which culminated in the Olympic Tennis event’s highest-ranked gold medalist.
