Phelps takes greatest Olympic gold medal swag ever

Michael Phelps owned the pool at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games with an astonishing eight gold medal performance. As if that weren’t enough, all but his 100m Butterfly victory was accompanied by a world record.

Along the way, he broke a host of other records, including surpassing Mark Spitz’s Munich 1972 Olympic Games effort of seven gold medals at a single summer Olympic Games. Many had said that was impossible.

Phelps began his assault on the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games with a bang, winning the Men’s 400m Individual Medley on day two in a world record time of 4:03.84, slicing 1.41 seconds off the old mark. Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh collected the silver medal and American Ryan Lochte won the bronze medal.

His second gold was in the 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay. His tilt at history almost ended when Frenchman Alain Bernard turned at the 50 meter mark on the final leg. Thirty-two-year-old American Jason Lezak was a body length behind the flying Bernard and it looked as though Phelps, who had swum the lead-off leg, and his team would have to settle for silver.

Lezak had other plans and produced one of the most stunning final 50m splits ever, a lightning quick 46.06, to overpower the Frenchman on the wall by 0.08 seconds and keep Phelps’ dream of eight golds alive. France collected the silver medal and Australia the bronze.

Phelps’ third gold came in the Men’s 200m Freestyle final on day four, in which he broke the world record by nearly one second with a time of 1:42.96. Park Taehwan of the Republic of Korea won the silver medal and Peter Vanderkay of the United States the bronze.

Victory in the Men’s 200m Butterfly final on day five took Phelps’ gold medal tally to four and gave him another world record - 1:52.03 in this, his pet event. Cseh had another great swim to finish with the silver medal and Matsuda Takeshi of Japan took the bronze.

The Men’s 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay, also on day five, was next for Phelps. His team’s world record of 6:58.56 broke the magical seven-minute barrier and netted Phelps’ fifth gold. Russia won the silver medal and Australia bronze.

Phelps’ then won gold in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley on day seven, setting a world record by 0.57 seconds. Cseh took silver and Lochte, the bronze.

As expected, the Men’s 100m Butterfly on day eight provided Phelps with his tightest race, but the challenge didn’t come from the man expected, American Ian Crocker. Little-known Milorad Cavic of Serbia turned at the 50m in front of Phelps and 0.09 seconds under the world record split. Phelps dug deep to touch out Cavic on the wall by 0.01 seconds to keep the dream alive.

Phelps’ final and eighth gold medal, which launched him into the Olympic stratosphere, came with a comfortable win in the Men’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay on day nine. Australia challenged momentarily but the US relegated them to silver. Japan took the bronze.

Stephanie Rice of Australia picked up three gold medals and three world records with victories in the 200m and 400m Individual Medley events and the 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay - the latter producing the biggest surprise. The Australians were rank outsiders and obliterated the world record by 5.78 seconds.

Japan’s Kitajima Kosuke briefly stepped out of Phelps’ enormous shadow to claim his own place in Olympic history at the Water Cube. Kitajima defended both his Olympic titles from Athens 2004 in winning the Men’s 100m Breaststroke in a world record time and also the Men’s 200m Breaststroke.

The highlight for China was its 1-2 finish in the Women’s 200m Butterfly, their only gold medal in the swimming events. China’s Liu Zige and Jiao Liuyang upset world record holder Jessicah Schipper of Australia, relegating her to the bronze medal and driving the crowd into wild celebration.

One of the finds of Beijing 2008 was 21-year-old first time Olympian Rebecca Soni of the United States. Soni, returning from heart surgery, had events added to her Olympic program after American Jessica Hardy withdrew from competition. Soni caused a huge upset on day seven, when she won gold in the Women’s 200m Breaststroke from world record holder and hot favorite Australian Leisel Jones. Soni also won silver behind Jones in the 100m Breaststroke and silver in the 4 x 100m Medley Relay.

Great Britain unearthed a star at the Water Cube in Rebecca Adlington. The bubbly British distance swimmer didn’t go into either of her two gold medal events as the favorite but triumphed in both. She won the Women’s 400m Freestyle and, in winning the 800m Freestyle, she broke the longest standing record left in the swimming pool. Adlington beat the great American Janet Evans‘19-year-old 800m Freestyle mark of 8:16.22 by 2.12 seconds to record 8:14.10.

The US topped the swimming medal count with 12 gold, nine silver and 10 bronze medals; Australia won six gold, six silver and eight bronze medals; Japan won two gold and three bronze medals.

The changing face of international swimming was demonstrated at these Games, with 19 nations winning medals in the swimming pool over the nine days of competition. The US dominated the program but other nations are posing a growing challenge to US hegemony.

Men’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay: Phelps wins record eighth gold

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Michael Phelps won his record eighth gold medal in the Men’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay final on Sunday but this time needed some help from his friends.

The US team of Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen, Jason Lezak and Phelps won at the National Aquatics Center in a time of 3:29.34 and in doing so broke the world record by 1.34 seconds.

The defending Olympic champions and world record holders led from start to finish.

Peirsol gave them a great start with a 53.16sec split. Hansen increased the lead on the world record split taking it 0.39 seconds under at the race’s halfway mark. Brenton Rickard swam his breaststroke leg in 58.56, faster than Hansen, to bring the Australians into second place.

Phelps fought off the Australian challenge in the Butterfly leg before Lezak kept Eamon Sullivan on his shoulder until the wall.

The Australian team of Hayden Stoeckel, Andrew Lauterstein, Rickard and Sullivan finished 0.70 seconds behind the US to win silver in an Oceania record 3:30.04, also under the old world record.

Australia went into the race as world champions but only as beneficiaries of a US disqualification at the 2007 world championships.

Japan’s team of Miyashita Junichi, Kitajima Kosuke, Fujii Takuro and Sato Hisayoshi took bronze in an Asian record 3:31.18.

Russia finished fourth in a European record 3:31.92.

One to go, Phelps!

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

One more gold, and Michael Phelps won’t have to share the “Athlete with most gold medals in a single Olympics” title with compatriot Mark Spitz, who did this 36 years ago in the Munich Games.

But this time, Phelps’s own efforts will not be enough to achieve this Olympic immortality. He will have to rely on his relay teammates. As the defending Olympic champions, world record holders and fastest final qualifiers, they will not let him down.

Standing in their way are the teams from Australia and Japan, who qualified second and third fastest, only 0.01 and 0.06 seconds behind them.

In the Women’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay, however, defending champions Australia may see less competition, qualifying over a second faster than Great Britain and the United States, who came in second and third.

In the Women’s 50m Freestyle final, 41-year-old Dara Torres from the United States will be under the spotlight. She had showed her competitors that her age is no issue in the pool by clocking the fastest time into the final. However, she is sure to meet the close competition from world record holder Lisbeth Trickett of Australia and Friday’s 100m Freestyle gold medalist Britta Steffen of Germany.

The Men’s 1500m Freestyle will be the last chance for Grant Hackett of Australia to bring something home from Beijing. And if he wins gold, it will be a history-making third straight 1500m title

Men’s 100m Butterfly: Phelps steps closer with seventh gold

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

American Michael Phelps overcame the one man left in the field of challengers who could have stopped his charge towards eight gold medals in the Men’s 100m Butterfly on Saturday at the National Aquatics Center.

Defending Olympic champion and world champion Phelps, who had qualified second fastest for the final, realized at the 50m mark he had a huge battle on his hands when Serbian Milorad Cavic touched first, 0.09 seconds under the world record.

helps and Cavic battled it out in the last 50m. A monumental upset looked to be approaching - until Phelps dug deep and out-touched Cavic on the wall.

Phelps won in an Olympic record time of 50.58, to take his tally of gold medals to seven, but only just, and by the slimmest of margins - 0.01 seconds.

Milorad Cavic said after the semifinals he could beat Phelps after qualifying fastest for the final, but finished with the silver medal in a time of 50.59.

Australia’s Andrew Lauterstein capped a great series of swims in the heats and semifinals to win the bronze medal in 51.12.

But world record holder Ian Crocker (USA), who has been breathing down Phelps’ neck this year with some threatening times, only arrived in fourth place with a time of 51.13.

Phelps to Crack Crocket to his 8th Gold

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Michael Phelps will have to fight his “great friend and great competitor” Ian Crocker in the Men’s 100m Butterfly on Saturday morning in his quest for eight gold medals.

The world record holder of this event, Crocker won’t allow an easy win for Phelps, as this is Crocker’s only chance to win an individual gold medal at the Beijing Games.

In the Women’s 200m Backstroke final, defending Olympic champion Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe will encounter the close competition from two Americans — world record holder Margaret Hoelzer and the 16-year-old rising star Elizabeth Beisel.

Great Britain’s Rebecca Adlington will go for her second gold at the Water Cube in the Women’s 800m Freestyle, after winning the Women’s 400m Freestyle on Monday. Camelia Alina Potec of Romania will be her biggest rival, with the absence of world champion Kate Ziegler of the United States and Olympic champion Ai Shibata of Japan, who failed to qualify.

The Men’s 50m Freestyle final will see the close match of Thursday’s 100m Freestyle champion Alain Bernard of France, world record holder Eamon Sullivan of Australia, and Brazilian Cesar Filho Cielo who qualified fastest for the final in an Olympic record.

The qualifiers to the Finals was not easy. Michael Phelps finished second just whishkers behind his team mate Ryan Lotche with respective timings being 1:57.70 and 1:57.69.  This may be because Phelps was ” conserving energy” for the final showdown.

Lochte Ready to Stop Phelp ?

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Ryan Lochte

Lochte, regarded as one of the few men capable of stopping Phelps’s quest to win an unprecedented eight golds in Beijing, has fully recovered from a bout off illness that hampered his chances of pushing him in the 400 medley.

Lochte, who teamed with Phelps to win gold in the 4×200 freestyle relay earlier in the day, led the way with a time of 1:58.65 ahead of Hungarian Laszlo Cseh, who has already finished second to Phelps in two finals.

“I feel a lot better, I’ve finally got my strength back. I got a good one under my belt and it looks good for my other races,” Lochte said. “What he’s doing in the pool is amazing, it’ll be a great race.”

Phelps, who is attempting an exhausting programme of 17 races, said he was trying to conserve every ounce of energy for his last three races.

“I’m just trying to get through everything,” he said. “It’s a lot of racing and I’m trying to take one race at a time (and) get ready for tomorrow because the next three events are pretty important for me.”

Michael Phelps: Walking through the Golden Gates

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

The deep gulps of air and fighting back of tears as Michael Phelps stood proudly upon the podium as US anthem the Star Spangled Banner rang around the Water Cube said it all.

It is a sound the 23-year-old American swimmer knows all too well. After winning the Men’s 200 meters Butterfly final — Phelps’s fourth gold medal of the Beijing Olympic Games, each on a world record time — another superlative can justifiably be added to the growing list of adjectives used to describe this amazing athlete: legend.

Phelps powered his way into Olympic history at Beijing 2008 to become the first person to ever win 10 Olympic gold medals. “I just kept thinking wow, I’m the greatest Olympian of all time, It’s a pretty great title. It’s pretty neat, I’m definitely honored.”

“Listening to the anthem, with the medal around your neck is an amazing feeling,” said Phelps, after his tenth record medal. “I am almost at a loss for words. Growing up I always wanted to be an Olympian.”

He is the classic wholesome all-American boy who, for an added twist of tension, even had the audacity to win the 200 meters Butterfly despite a goggle malfunction which affected his vision.

“When my goggles filled up there was nothing I could do. All I could do at that point was swim. I tried to see something at the 150 wall. I tried to see the T on the bottom to judge my turn. I was more or less trying to count my strokes, hoping I was dead on. I’m just disappointed because I know I can go faster than that.”
